| Shopping & Coffee This old, beautiful and prosperous town is internationally known for the preservation of its interesting town centre, where many of the wooden houses look just as they did 100 years ago. Apart from admiring the picturesque houses you can also take a guided tour or shop in the numerous small and attractive shops. Alingsås is also known as the ”Café Town” for its wealth of small coffee shops, so you’ll soon find somewhere to take a break in very pleasant surroundings!
Excursions Anten-Gräfsnäs This railway museum is situated on the old “Västgötabanan” railway. It is no longer used for regular services, but there is now a very popular museum. You can see vintage steam locomotives that will take you on a beautiful journey along Lake Anten. The final destination is Gräfsnäs with its old castle ruins where you can stop for a while for a meal, a swim, and an interesting stroll in the park or around the ruins.
The old castle ruins in the Gräfsnäs park have an interesting history. For many years only a few small pieces of the old castle have survived, but the park area on the northern shore of Lake Anten is still impressive with its beautiful old trees. The area houses exhibitions, a restaurant, old local buildings and an inviting beach. The best way of reaching the area is on the Anten-Gräfsnäs vintage railway with its museum in Anten village south of Lake Anten.
Nolhaga Nolhaga castle and park are situated just a short walk away from the town centre. The newly renovated interior hosts an elegant restaurant and conference centre. A short walk or drive past the allotment gardens and the primeval forest leads you to Mjörn, Västergötlands 3rd largest lake. A nature reserve, a bird watching tower and swamp, commonly referred to as “Congo”, are found within the bay of the lake. These are situated in close proximity to another restaurant, Tallhyddan, which offers activities such as mini golf, an adventure golf course and a nightclub on weekends. A lovely way to pass time with the little ones is a walk around the animal park which is accessible all day round and is free of charge. It also offers an animal farm with animals such as goats, pigs and chickens where the kids are welcome to pet the animals. Not far from the animal park is a playground and picnic area. A recreational area with access to indoor and outdoor sport facilities is also available within the park area for use by both the locals and tourists.
